Collaboration at a cost?

12 06 2015

I got this great post from the Marketoonist this week, I’m sure we can all sympathise with the pain!

But how often have you emailed the colleague next to you, or failed to walk that one flight of stairs to improve communication?

Leadership Lessons from Leadercast

3 06 2015

I recently attended (watched?) the Leadercast online event, billed as the largest leadership event in the world. It featured presentations from a great range of speakers including Seth Godin, Rudy Giuliani, Peyton Manning, Ed Catmull and Malala Yousafzai the “Bravest Girl in the World”. There was numerous highlights and the Q&A’s between speakers was very insightful, but here’s a few of my highlights:

“Limit your field of view and you will see more!”, From ex Navy Seal Rorke Denver, I see this all the time, and am often guilty my self. As an even wiser colleague once told me, Don’t boil the ocean!

“Bravery is a team sport”, Ed Catmull from Pixar told a great story about how someone accidentally deleted a whole section of Toy Story 2 from the hard drives. Imagine that? but remarkably no one reverted to the blame game, instead they focused on fixing the process which allowed it to happen, if the finger of blame had come out it would have killed the culture that allowed creativity to thrive! Even though they knew who did it!

“Leadership is a path of Self Discovery”, I can’t remember who said it, but just take a look at the range of speakers, you would find it hard to put together a more disparate group, yet they are all leaders in their own right. Everyone must find their own style of leadership, and there is no right or wrong answer for any set management or leadership challenge, you just have to be true to your self, be honest, and find your voice.

What I learnt at eTail Asia

13 03 2015

eTailI just spent an interesting couple of days at WBR’s eTail Asia in Singapore. They created a great mix of retailers and a good balance of online marketing and ecommerce, which also featured lots of insight for any marketer. Congrats to the whole team – Awesome event as always!

Here’s my top 7 take aways:

1) Think globally but act ‘hyper local’. Culture affects channels as much as it can message.

2) It only takes one person to start building a content marketing machine!

  • Start small and build over time
  • Engage users and influencers
  • Have an editorial calendar
  • Share it with partners
  • 92% of customer trust earned media – It will pay for itself!

3) The war of attribution – Search (or email in our case) gets a lot of credit but what made you search in the first place? So count people not clicks. I think this is the next big challenge for all marketers. We have so many things to measure, and with devices proliferating, it’s getting harder and harder to get to the bottom of what drove behavior. Finding a way to measure and depict the overall customer journey will help marketers make smarter decisions. Then building a system that (automatically) markets to people based on individual behavior is the Holy Grail! Banner Blindness – 90% of people who view banners don’t click, but 77% more people are reached via banners, and 22% are more likely to click when they get emails and banners ad’s! Got a headache yet?

4) Turn big data into smart data – Chose one simple metric to really focus on and use other metrics as levers. For Grab Taxi, it was number of rides. We need to invest in intelligent technology that helps us turn data into decisions.

5) Channels are proliferating – Don’t pass the fragmentation onto the customer! The customer journey is very much cross device so we must build a consistent experience.

6) Mobile Mobile Mobile

7) TALENT – The more things change the more they stay the same! Data driven marketers will be the future rock stars of marketing (I just hired a maths tutor for my kids!).

I Love Stock Photos!

4 03 2015

iStock-Unfinished-Business-3Actually I don’t, but “I Hate Stock Photos” seemed a bit harsh!

A friend just shared this great post from Adweek. It’s a send up of a popular set of stock photos (that I admit have even turned up in some of our promotions) that are being used by Getty and 20th Century Fox to cleverly promote a new movie. But it also highlights just how ridiculous (and awesome) stock photos really are! It’s hard to pick a favorite but you can view them here!

I would always recommend using original artwork and photos but for some reason that is often harder to do than say. So if you do have to use them read this slideshare from HubSpot first – 10’s Do’s and Don’ts for Using Stock Photos.

But the real question – How long until one of these Vince Vaughn stock photos end up in someones marketing materials by mistake?
